What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings are restorative treatments that use composite resin to fill in a decayed tooth. When a cavity occurs, the appropriate method of treatment is typically a filling but instead of relying on traditional amalgam (silver or gold), we can use this natural solution that is matched to your tooth color to create a blended, seamless smile.

Not only do they last longer, but they contain no metal, making them a safer solution for patients and the environment. They are also capable of withstanding moderate pressure from daily use (i.e. chewing).

How Are Tooth-Colored Fillings Placed?

Dr. Valentine will begin the process by administering local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable before she begins the process of cleaning out your decayed tooth. Completed in just one visit to our office, she will match the composite resin to your natural tooth color using a shade guide. Once she has established the correct color, she will begin to clean out the decayed areas of your tooth.

It is necessary for the tooth to remain dry during the filling process, so it could take a bit longer than the placement of a traditional amalgam filling.

Once the tooth is ready for the composite resin, she will fill it and use a special curing light to harden the solution, creating a seal to protect against future reinfection or possible damage.

What Are the Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Most individuals opt for metal-free fillings in Beverly Hills because it will improve their smile’s aesthetics, but there are many additional benefits to this type of restorative treatment, including:

  • Traditional amalgam requires more of the tooth to be removed to make room for the filling. However, tooth-colored fillings only require that the decayed portion be removed, allowing more of your natural tooth to be kept in place.
  • They create a tight seal, reducing the chances of bacteria re-entering the tooth.

You don’t have to worry about discoloration around the base of your tooth like you would with a traditional amalgam filling.
