The time has finally come! The weather is getting warmer, the air is getting sweeter and vacation is just around the corner. It’s the perfect time to wind down and take a break—but not from your oral health habits.
Summer vacation may be a time for relaxation, but try not to neglect your teeth while enjoying your days off. Here are five summer oral health tips you can follow to keep your smile bright and healthy all season long.
Limit Sugary Drinks
It can be tempting to reach for an ice-cold juice, soda, lemonade, or sports drink when you’ve been out in the sun all day, but drinks with high concentrations of sugar can lead to tooth decay and enamel erosion. Limit the number of sugary drinks you consume and opt for water instead.
Use a Straw
If you do decide to drink sweet or acidic beverages, using a straw allows the beverage to have reduced contact with your teeth, which helps prevent tooth discoloration, tooth decay, and cavities.
Establish an Oral Hygiene Routine
It’s normal for your routine to falter a bit once summer hits, especially when you have kids and they’re out of school. Regardless, you must do your best to maintain your oral hygiene routine on your new schedule. Make sure you’re brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily.
Snack on Tooth-Friendly Foods
Before you hit the beach or the pool, pack healthy snacks the whole family can enjoy. Foods that are great for your physical and oral health include baby carrots, celery, apples, plain yogurt, whole-grain crackers or plain nuts.
Water is the perfect beverage to hydrate you on a hot summer day. Did you know it’s great for your oral health as well? Drinking water throughout the day helps rinse your mouth of plaque-causing bacteria, sugars, and any food left behind after eating.
Summer is the time to make memories with your family that will last a lifetime. It can be easy to get lost in all the fun, but try not to let that get in the way of your oral health. Follow these five tips, relax, and enjoy your summer knowing your grin is in its best shape possible.
